Android

Install

Until the Play Store release, the app installs from a file. You only do this once, and updates install the same way, over the top.

  1. Download the .apk file from the download page on your phone, or get it from a bandmate by WhatsApp, Messages, Google Drive, email or Quick Share.
  2. Open it from your notifications or Files › Downloads.
  3. If Android says it can’t install apps from this source, tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, then go back.
  4. Tap Install. If Play Protect warns that the app is from an unknown developer, tap More details › Install anyway.
  5. Tap Open.

Pair with the Mac

  1. Join the band’s Wi-Fi, the same network as the Mac.
  2. Type your name, for example “Sam”. The band sees it next to setlists you change.
  3. On the Mac, choose Show pairing code… from the Setlist Remote menu.
  4. Tap Allow camera and point the phone at the code. It connects straight away.

You only pair once. After that the app reconnects by itself whenever you’re on the band’s Wi-Fi. To change your name later, tap the laptop icon on the Setlists screen, then Change your name.

Updating

Install the newer .apk the same way. It replaces the old version and keeps your pairing and setlists.

If something’s wrong

  • “Connecting to the Mac…” doesn’t go away. Check you’re on the band’s Wi-Fi and not mobile data, and that Setlist Remote is running on the Mac.
  • “This phone was removed on the Mac”. Scan a new pairing code.
  • “App not installed” when updating. Get the latest file. If it still fails, uninstall the app, install the new file and pair again.

iPhone and browsers

The band’s Mac serves the app to your phone’s browser over the band’s Wi-Fi. It does everything the app does, including editing setlists while the Mac is off.

First time

  1. Join the band’s Wi-Fi, the same network as the Mac.
  2. On the Mac, choose Show pairing code… from the Setlist Remote menu (the ▶︎ in the menu bar).
  3. Point your phone’s camera at the lower code, No app? Use the browser, and tap the link.
  4. Your phone needs to trust the band’s certificate once. The page shows the steps. On an iPhone:
    1. Tap Download the band certificate, then Allow and Close.
    2. Open Settings, tap Profile Downloaded near the top, then Install (twice), and enter your passcode.
    3. In Settings, go to General › About › Certificate Trust Settings and turn on the switch for Setlist Remote and your Mac’s name.
    4. Go back to Safari. The page notices and carries on by itself.
  5. Type your name (the band sees it next to setlists you change) and tap Pair.
  6. Add it to your Home Screen: tap Share › Add to Home Screen. It then opens full-screen like an app, and Safari keeps its data. Otherwise Safari may clear it after a week unused and you’d need to pair again.

The certificate only works for addresses on private networks like the band’s Wi-Fi, so it can’t be used for any real website. If the Mac’s code expired while you were in Settings, show a new one and scan again. You won’t need to install the certificate twice.

Differences from the app

  • Reordering and deleting songs use the ⌃ ⌄ and bin buttons on each row, instead of dragging and swiping.
  • Deleting asks first.
  • There’s no vibration when you tap the performance controls, because iPhone browsers can’t vibrate.

If something’s wrong

  • “Not trusted yet” doesn’t go away. Check the Certificate Trust Settings switch from step 4.3. It’s separate from installing the profile.
  • The page won’t load at all. Check you’re on the band’s Wi-Fi and the Setlist Remote menu shows it’s running.
  • A different Mac. Each Mac has its own certificate, so install that Mac’s too.

Apple Watch

Run the set from your wrist with your iPhone locked in a pocket or bag. The watch talks to the Mac directly over the band’s Wi-Fi, so the phone only matters once, to set it up.

  • Now: what’s playing and what’s next, a big Next, then Previous, Stop, Play and Pause.
  • Songs: the set (turn the Digital Crown to scroll); tap a song to jump to it. Tap the set’s name to pick another set.
  • Logic: whether Logic is ready, and Fix Logic (opens Logic, brings it to the front, and clears dialogs that only need acknowledging, exactly like Fix Logic on a phone).

Each press gives a firm tap when the Mac has done it, or a different buzz and a short message when it couldn’t. The watch also buzzes, with a red banner, when Logic is blocked or closes, or the Mac drops off the network.

Needs

  • An Apple Watch on watchOS 10 or later, paired with an iPhone that has Setlist Remote.
  • The watch able to join the band’s Wi-Fi. Watches join networks their iPhone knows, so connect the iPhone to the band’s router once, with the watch nearby.

Set up

  1. Install the watch app: on the iPhone, open the Watch app, find Setlist Remote under Available Apps, and tap Install.
  2. With the iPhone connected to the Mac, open Setlist Remote › Settings › Set up Apple Watch. It says “Done” when the watch has its pairing (the watch app needn’t be open).
  3. Open Setlist Remote on the watch.

The watch is paired as a device of its own, named after you, for example “Sam (watch)”. It’s listed in the Mac’s menu bar with the phones, and edits and jumps from it are credited to it. Removing it there disconnects the watch, which then asks to be set up again.

Keep it on screen during a gig

watchOS returns to the clock after a while, and the watch app only talks to the Mac while it’s open. (With no internet, nothing can wake it in the background.) Before a gig, on the watch:

  • Settings › General › Return to Clock: choose Setlist Remote, then Custom and After 1 hour, so lowering your wrist keeps the app.

With the wrist lowered (always-on), it keeps updating.

If something’s wrong with the watch

The watch saysWhat to do
Can’t reach the Mac. Check this watch is on the …Is the Mac on and Setlist Remote open? On the watch, Settings › Wi-Fi: join the band’s router
Set up this watch from Setlist Remote on your …It was removed on the Mac, or never set up: Settings › Set up Apple Watch on the iPhone
This watch and the Mac run different versions …Update the iPhone app (which updates the watch app) and the Mac app together
Logic is showing ”…”, so it can’t play …A dialog needs a real answer (such as Save or Don’t Save): answer it on a phone, which shows the dialog
Logic isn’t responding on the Mac …Force quit and reopen it from a phone. The watch leaves anything that could lose work to a phone
